What you put on your skin is as important as not getting too much sun. But we’re all human and sometimes we lose track of time which means our skin gets overexposed from time to time. That’s why it’s important to have a product on hand that can help soothe your skin as an after-sun soothing lotion.
Special thanks to Uncle Bud’s for sponsoring this post and for making a product I’m excited to use this summer. This post contains affiliate links.
The first time I had skin cancer, I was 29 years old and had just given birth to the most high maintenance little boy. Growing up in Alaska meant short winter days spent in the tanning bed. It helped with Seasonal Affective Disorder, but we all know teen girls just wanna be tan. I wish I had known then that taking care of my skin was so important.
I was able to stay out of the sun quite often when we moved to Georgia then to North Carolina, but as soon as we moved to Florida’s Emerald Coast, I was done for.
My kids loved the beach.
Unfortunately, my boys burn after thirty minutes in the sun, so we have to keep on top of their sunscreen application which is hard to do when you’re having fun. You find me a 7 year old who wants to sit out of the water long enough for his sunscreen to dry and I’ll show you a kid who might need CPR.
Fortunately, the skin is resilient and if you treat it well, it will treat you well. I don’t want to be the cause for my children getting skin cancer, and I definitely don’t want to deal with that mess again, so I do my best to take care of their skin all summer long.
Here are my 5 best tips for taking care of your skin this summer, and the best after sun product on the market
1. Apply Sunscreen Every Day.
If you’re spontaneous like me, you’ll want your skin to be primed if you wind up outside for longer than 15 minutes. Make it a habit to treat sunscreen like lotion in the morning. Carry it with you at all times so you can reapply when needed.
Next time you find yourself at the beach on a whim, you’ll be ready.
2. Set a Timer for Reapplication
Sunscreen only lasts for so long and the length of its life depends on whether or not you’re sweating or getting wet. Read the label on your sunscreen to see how long it lasts, then set an alarm for 15 minutes before time wears out. Sunscreen takes a little time to soak in and you want to give yourself a little bit of time to overlap before it quits working, especially if you or your loved one is fair.
For instance, if your sunscreen says it needs to be reapplied every 80 minutes and is water resistant, set a timer for 65 minutes so that you can reapply at 65 minutes.
3. Wear a Hat
I know summer comes with lots of heat which means lots of sweat, but a hat that protects your face, chest, and shoulders will help tremendously. Find a hat with a lightweight material that either wicks sweat or allows it to evaporate. I promise, a little scalp sweat is better than a sunburn.
4. Protect your Feet & Hands
I don’t know why we don’t think of this, but our feet and hands burn too. As a matter of fact, the reason hands age so much quicker than any other part of the body is because they’re exposed to the elements more than any other body part, and we don’t think to take care of them! Use a lotion with SPF in it every day on your hands and feet.
My first skin cancer spot was between my toes! Bob Marley died of malignant melanoma on his feet from sun exposure. Take care of your extremities!
5. Use an After-sun soothing Skincare Routine .
After a day in the sun, even if you don’t feel burned, I highly recommend an after sun moisturizing routine. When you do get a minor burn, there is one product on the market that I’m a huge fan of.
If you know me at all, you know I’m a HUGE fan of cannabis and its many healing forms. Uncle Bud’s Sunburn Soother offers relief from minor sunburn caused by overexposure to the sun or other UV rays.
