Winter can be a great season to spend cleaning and organizing our home. As we spend more time inside we feel the heaviness of all the stuff we have in our home. Winter can feel claustrophobic since we are unable to go outside as much as during other seasons. We can take advantage of these feelings and get our whole family involved in deep cleaning our home so come spring we will be ready to jump into other activities. Deep cleaning our home does not have to be scary or take up our every waking hour.
The Attic
Starting at the top of our home we can focus on our attics. We can start by simply looking at what is in our attic and if there are any whole categories we no longer need. For example items that have been outgrown should be donated so someone else can enjoy them. Sometimes as you organize your attic you might find you need a little bit of extra help and look for attic cleaning orange county or other services that can give you a boost in deep cleaning. Knowing when to ask for professional help can make your cleaning go much smoother.
The Living Room
The living room is one of the rooms we spend the most time in so it is important to find a way to keep our spaces organized. Sometimes this can include simple actions such as adding a wastebasket , creating a place for every item, or making sure items that should be in other rooms don’t collect. We want to be able to put up our feet when we are relaxing in the living room and not see lots of unneeded clutter. We should remember we can always use a decorative basket or box to keep items we need organized and out of sight.
The Home Office
If we are working from home it is important that we make sure our area is clean and organized both for ourselves and to set up good habits in our children. Having a clearly defined space to do work helps us with our work/life balance and allows us to focus on what we have to accomplish. When we organize our home offices we should make sure we create a system that works for us. That might look like accordian files, a standing desk, or simply making sure we have enough light for our projects. The better organized our home offices are the better we will feel and the less likely that our family members will accidently toss or mess up something important.
The Bedroom
The bedroom is where we go to relax and get a good night’s sleep. If we have a disorganized room we will struggle to sleep. Organization can be very personal, for example if we know we never have time to put away clean laundry we can simply create a space in a basket or box where we put our clean laundry. We need to remember that it is ok if we organize by placing things in containers so we don;t have to see all the stuff we have. This is especially true of childrens bedrooms. If there is a spot where all the toys go each night it is ok if that toy box is not super organized or neat. We must not let some idea of the perfect room keep us from getting our bedroom pretty good and to a point where we know we will be able to get the sleep we need.
The Basement
When working on basements it is important that we take a quick peak for any structural issues which might cause trouble later. It is much easier to fix a small leak than to clean up a whole basement which has flooded. Basements can be organized to mainly be for storage or to create space for other activities such as having a play area for our kids or an entertainment center for the whole family. Basements are also an area we may need to dust and make sure there are no large spider webs. We should make sure that we can use our basements for whatever we need to use them for so the rest of our home can stay cleaner and more organized.
