Life is crazy, right? Kyle keeps saying, “Just wait for XYZ until when our lives are normal for at least a year before you do XYZ thing!” Which completely blows my mind because life is never normal. What on earth is normal, anyway? And will our lives ever be settled or normal? We always seem to be in a constant tide of moving or new jobs or illnesses or illnesses or illnesses or illnesses or . . . Sorry, had to booty bump the broken record player there. It just feels like the issues are never-ending and when one thing resolves itself, another one crops up.
I feel lucky that we adopted a grain free lifestyle a few years ago, but we haven’t been 100% because we eat out a lot and who likes to avoid grains while eating out? Not I, said the chubby middle aged mom! With Grady’s recent health troubles and Celiac Disease diagnosis, we’ve had to go from lackadaisical gluten free to completely serious and neurotic. It has heaped tons of stress onto our already stressful lives. It has caused our other two children to have a shocking and completely Star Wars Rebels type reaction to the issues at hand.
I try using aversion tactics in moments like these. Styles has been yammering on non-stop about the new Star Wars Rebels show on Disney XD. he even started rebuilding some of his Star Wars LEGOs in preparation.
For Grady I cooked up some new treats that make him feel like he’s eating gluten-filled treats, but he’s not! He has been so precious asking “Does it have dlooten in it, Mommy?” When I let him know that there is no gluten in whatever food it is he’s asking about, he smiles and starts shaking in excitement before throwing his arms around my legs and saying, “Thank you, Mommy!” as though I created the food special for him with no gluten in it, even when it’s something like a fresh fruit.
Our local Walmart is a little crazy. It’s like a tourist trap with an airbrushing stand and about 85 aisles of tourist trap souvenirs like plastic snow globes – nothing says “Florida” quite like a snowglobe, right? – and bags of shells that say “Destin” on the bag. Our toy situation is a two aisle little afterthought thrown into the back of the store. Luckily, I only had to walk in the door to find the new Star Wars Rebels DVD that is completely exclusive to Walmart from October 3 – 13.
I was suuuuper bummed that my store didn’t have this majorly sweet Inquisitor Lightsaber by Hasbro, but I ordered one online and it should be here any day now. I really can’t wait to see Grady chase Madilyn around with it. I probably should consider wrapping my TV in bubble wrap, right?
The Star Wars Rebels Millennium Falcon Vehicle is sold out online and I couldn’t find a spot for it in my local Walmart, but if you’re able to get ahold of one, please let me know. I’ll have you ship it to Grady on my behalf. I’m pretty sure he’d forget all about his limited diet after receiving this bad boy. Check the toy section at your local Walmart for all of the super great toys by Hasbro including the Star Wars Command Star Destroyer .
So basically, my kids are spoiled. There. I said it. Every time something crazy happens, I over compensate by buying them something. Perhaps that’s why the littles’ room looks like the Joplin tornado hit it on a daily basis. But without those little “happys” as I like to call them, there wouldn’t be any sweet moments like this.
How often do you get to see the very children who have a love/hate relationship bonding over their new Star Wars slippers?

These look so yummy – and probably less messy than regular popcorn. Bonus that it’s gluten-free.

I know how hard it is when the kids can’t have all of those treats. There is gluten in EVERYTHING! well, not everything but its all over the place and even thought my kids know to ask “Does it have gluten?” I can definitely see the little sad looks in their eyes when I have to say they can’t have something. I love it when delicious foods like these are naturally gluten free but can still be a treat. Pinned!

Grady is pretty good about it because he doesn’t want his butthole to come out again, but it is super sad that he can’t have some of the things he used to love. We are finding some fantastic substitutes and I sent ENORMOUS Udi’s chocolate muffins in to his school to keep in the freezer for when there is a party. 🙂

They look really good. I’m so sorry for the eating challenges. It’s hard when one child can’t eat something and the whole family has to adjust. Thankfully there are so many excellent gluten free options and recipes these days.
Summer says
Luckily we went gluten free a few years ago, but only at home. We kind of ate whatever the heck we wanted to when we ate out. Eating out has been an adjustment for SURE and Grady now has to eat at a table by himself at lunch which is SUPER sad. 🙁 I do feel grateful for fantastic gluten free options these days!

The popcorn balls look like an amazing snack, I’ll hold on to the recipe for when the kids come down. As always I enjoy reading your posts. You are so talented; a writer, a chef, an artist a fantastic mom and wife. I’m so proud! I’ll keep an eye out at our Walmart.

They’re SO good! They would be a great cheat for you too! 🙂 My knees are killing me from eating a few because of the corn so I’ve got to get back on the corn-free wagon!
