Southern Nostalgia – A Rum Cocktail Recipe

I’m fully expecting to catch all kinds of red hot hell from the Yankees about this Publix southern-inspired rum cocktail and I don’t even care.

Rum Cocktail with peanuts

My Pop’s favorite soda was Cream Soda and he absolutely loved his boiled peanuts.

And yes, he ate them together.

Southern Rum Cocktail

There’s not much as wholly southern as boiled peanuts, not even cheese grits come close to being as southern as a road-side stand of a dirty-handed peanut farmer hustling boiled peanuts.

Back when I was still a youngin’, we spent summers in Florida with our dad. Each summer, we would trek to Atlanta where my uncle lived or down to Disney or Busch Gardens. Every time we went on a road trip, we picked up a bag of boiled peanuts to munch on. They were always so good hot, right out of a briny pot on the side of the road, but they’re equally good served cold out of the refrigerator the next day.

I don’t even remember what we did with our shells as we ate them in the car, I just distinctly remember my dad’s navy blue Buick Regal with velvety seats.

It smelled like flatulence and spearmint, so much so that I almost enjoy the smell of chewing gum and farts in my husband’s car now.

Kyle was raised in Florida by Yankee parents and he remembers the first time he ever had boiled peanuts at his friend’s house. He fell in love with them that day and recently dug into his past to come up with a cocktail that would appeal to the southerners who vacation in the little resort town where we currently reside.

I, on the other hand, don’t remember a time in my life without boiled peanuts.

Which is why I was excited to give this recipe a try, and I was oddly in love with it. It really was like stepping back into a time where I wore giant bangs and tight-rolled pants.

Our hope is that this simple rum cocktail takes the older generation back to a simpler time.

You know, peanuts in a bottle at 10, 2, & 4. But this time in a rum cocktail.
