I’m never, ever up in time to make breakfast for Styles before he has to leave for school. Before you crucify me, he’s 12 years old (almost 13), and when I do wake up with him, he talks my ear off. Now, there are a few things you need to know about us. One is that you really shouldn’t talk to me until I’ve had coffee, lest you find your head detached from your body. Two is that Styles cannot talk and do anything else at the same time. That means that he cannot talk and eat, talk and drink, talk and wash dishes, talk and put his clothes on, talk and grab his backpack, talk and walk out the door. It just doesn’t happen. He flaps his lips right into missing the bus.
So, it really is better if I stay out of his way in the morning and just let him do his thing. He’s old enough to microwave himself some oatmeal, crack a hard boiled egg and peel a banana, or whip up a smoothie , like my favorite Pineapple Upside Down Cake Smoothie in our little individual smoothie maker thingiemebob.
On the weekends, we all enjoy drinking smoothies, but we all have different tastes, so it makes smoothie building a little more difficult than, “Hey! Mommy’s making strawberry smoothies today!” I’ve found that what helps me out is pulling a little bit of everything that could possibly go into a smoothie out of the freezer, refrigerator, and pantry; setting it into individual dishes, and allowing my children to choose what goes into their own smoothies. Sometimes they really surprise me with the things they put in. My little Grady is always the most surprising, often choosing dark, leafy greens and chia seeds for his smoothies.
Madilyn is the least surprising. She will put flax and chia into her smoothie, but she always wants her “Peanut Butter & Jelly Smoothie with Chocolate, please!”, which is really just a handful of Strawberries, peanut butter, milk, and some chocolate flavored Carnation Breakfast Essentials . Whatever they all choose, they always end up drinking because they helped make it, and nobody likes to admit that their cooking is gross, right? Even little kids. But the thing is, when we add Carnation Breakfast Essentials to our smoothies, we really can’t go wrong.
Styles will try just about anything, but he does have some standbys, and he’s a fantastic smoothie maker. He got braces this year, and having to undergo some serious teeth and jaw rearranging. He generally spends a week after having his braces tightened, unable to eat anything solid. The first couple of months, I watched my already skinny little boy become gaunt every few weeks. I couldn’t handle it so I started looking for viable options for him. I wanted him to have something he could consume that would provide him all the nutrients, fat, and calories that he needed to thrive and not turn into a skeleton once a month.
My search led me to Carnation Breakfast Essentials which provides 21 Vitamins & Minerals, 13g of Protein, As Much Calcium as a 6 oz cup of yogurt, and fit within my budget. Not only that, but he actually enjoys the taste, and loves having the option to throw some frozen fruit in with it to create an all new breakfast according to the mood his taste buds are in that day. We’re kind of boring and stick to the Classic French Vanilla & Rich Milk Chocolate flavors, but there are lots of others including Classic Chocolate Malt, Dark Chocolate, & Strawberry Sensation. It’s so easy to make, even my three year old can do it!
I got my Carnation Breakfast Essentials at Kroger , and used a great coupon. You can look for Carnation Breakfast Essentials offers Here and take smoothie making to a whole new level at your house too.
Seriously, though. Enough about the kids. Kyle and I have a favorite smoothie. It reminds him of cruising the Caribbean and it reminds me of my grandma’s old pineapple upside down cake. It’s so easy to make, uses only 4 ingredients, and tastes like cake. For realz. As much as a smoothie can possibly taste like cake anyways. I’m sharing it with the world, because you guys really oughta know about it. Now you can have your cake for breakfast and eat it too!
You’re welcome.

The first one was delish for about 5 minutes then the pineapple and milk turned bitter. We used coconut milk next time and OMG. SO GOOD.
