My family history is riddled with cancer, skin cancer being the most prevalent. I had an uncle who had malignant melanoma on his head. Had being the operative word. The cancer eventually killed him. Both of my grandfathers have had melanoma, squamous, and basal cells removed. My mom has had cancerous spots removed, and as of this year, my sister and I both had our first skin cancers removed as well. I was 29 when I got my diagnosis and I wasn’t surprised or scared, but it did make me realize that what I do for my kids now will either pass on the legacy of skin cancer to them, or protect them, to the best of my abilities, from it.
The news of my skin cancer came amidst the news that the sun may not be the only thing causing skin cancer, but the toxins and chemicals within the very popular sun screens that we use may also be a huge contributing factor. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) came out with a list of sunscreens that have ingredients in them that are known to speed up the growth of skin tumors and also contain hormone disruptors. These sunscreens are listed in their “2011 Hall of Shame”. If you’re using a popular brand of sunscreen, it is more than likely on this list. In addition, UVA rays are major contributors to skin cancer and many sun screens hardly protect against these rays. So despite your sunscreen saying that it has a 50SPF on it, if it doesn’t protect against UVA rays, your chances of getting skin cancer are increased despite the fact that your skin may not actually burn.
i play.® has some of the very best skin-care products on the market. The best way to protect your skin is to practice sun-abstinence. But since that’s not really feasible (or fun!), it is recommended that you wear a hat with a brim large enough to shade your face, and long sleeved clothing. i play.® makes hats and clothing that adhere to these standards, as well as some really kickin’ swim diapers. No more bulkiness or spending loads of money on those disposable swimmies. YUCK!
Grady went to the beach with us when he was 2 months old and here is a picture of him all decked out in his i play.® solid brim sun hat and i play.® breatheasy sun protection shirt. He was unable to wear sun screen at that time and these products protected his fragile skin. I didn’t worry about him once, knowing that we had chosen a great product. When he began to look a little flushed, I splashed some water on him and he cooled off immediately. Having the long-sleeved shirt on him made me feel safe with his sun exposure.
i play.® was generous enough to send me a pink tie-dye rash guard set to review. I got the XL size for Madilyn and I have NO DOUBT that it will still fit next summer. The set is adorable and includes a pink tie-dye t-shirt and a pink tie-dye swim diaper. The fit is very generous and the set is SO SO cute. I love that i play.® has options that are not only super cute, but sun-safe. So many parents are guilty of not putting their children in what might be the most sun-safe suits because they’re “cute”. i play.® offers suits that are not only sun-safe but fashionable. You can still be cute AND safe while you’re out enjoying the sun!
