Today has been another one of “those days”. I hit the ground running and haven’t stopped since. I didn’t even GET to linger in bed this morning. Bah.
I got up and got Styles off to school while preparing breakfast for the babies, juggling salt and pepper shakers with my feet, and answering the phone with my chin. I cut myself 1/2 of a slice of Paleo Banana Bread while dumping a scrambled egg onto Grady’s tray and then wiped a puddle of milk up off of the floor, courtesy Madilyn.
When he was done with his egg, I dressed Grady who had made a present for me. When I was done with him, I dressed Madilyn in the most adorable tights and tunic from GAP. I almost died of cuteness.
Shortly after, while I was working on my 21 Day Body Transformation – Day 2 post, Madilyn told me she had to pee.
“Fine, sweetie, go pee!”
But no, she has this new thing where she wants me to come with her every time she goes to the bathroom so I told her I’d be right there.
I should have gone right then.
It was all too quiet and I heard Grady scuffling around in there too so I put the laptop down and high-tailed it into the bathroom.
Madilyn had smothered herself in body wash. All over her arms, all over her legs, all over her I-almost-died-of-cuteness outfit.
“MADILYN!” I screamed.
I then put her in the shower and turned the water on, not thinking about the fact that it would be freezing cold. She immediately started screaming and clamoring to get out. I felt the water and hung my head in shame as I moved my icy hand up to the spout to move it out of her way.
She said a tearful “Thank you, Mom” as the icy stream quit hitting her bare skin.
I felt terrible. But she was still soapy so I let the water warm up and then showered her off.
We agreed upon a new outfit and I dressed her while giving her big, warm hugs to heat her up after my major mommy-blunder.
I was all set to meet a friend of mine for a Book-Fair date at Styles’ school at 10. Yeah. NOT gonna happen.
I text her to let her know that I would be there at 10:30.
Kyle finally woke up and I told him that I was going to go get myself into presentable shape for the book fair and that I was meeting June at 10:30. I also told him that he was going to keep the babies.
I went to put my makeup on and Madilyn said she wanted to go to the book fair with me so I weighed the pros and cons in my head before answering her. I had lovely visions of us calmly picking books out and of her getting really excited over the absolute best ones that the fair had to offer, while hearts swirled above our heads and we spun in unison as only Hollywood mommies and daughters do.
I said yes.
Right about that same time, The Workaholic came tearing into the bathroom, scolding me for leaving my coffee on the coffee table (uh…DUH!) for Grady to get into. It had apparently fallen onto the lovely beige carpet. Eh…what’s one more stain? Besides. We JUST got a shipment of all-natural and perfectly safe cleaning products in the mail so I handed him the spot cleaner and put him to work.
I loaded Madilyn into the car seat at 10:30am and off we went. About that time my tummy began to rumble and I cursed my lack of a breakfast. Since starting Paleo, I eat breakfast religiously. Generally an egg with some vegetables in it and either bacon or sausage. It lasts me all day long and I usually eat a super-small lunch sometime around 2 or 3 before picking the boys up from school, with snacks dotted in between to satiate my breastfeeding-induced snack tooth. I’m thankful that since starting Paleo, I no longer feel blood sugar swings AT ALL. I knew that missing breakfast today wasn’t going to send me into a crazy swing but I also knew that we’d be out for a while and I hadn’t even packed anything to munch on.
When we were done with the book fair, we went to Murphy Express to get some healthy snacks. We always get our gas at Murphy and we’ve shopped there for vacation snacks before so I knew that they had snacks beyond the nasty sugar-laden stuff that you find in most convenience stores. I actually had hard boiled eggs in mind. Of course, once we got there we got a few more things to snack on. Madilyn picked out a juice, a green apple, and a stick of cheese. I got some hard boiled eggs, a pickle, and green beans. Madilyn generally likes to get honey buns and chips that are available widely at convenience stores but because I am slowly trying to move my kids to the Paleo lifestyle that doesn’t allow for grains, refined sugar, or legumes, I tried to keep her on a primal-ish track.
I have a new-found love affair with vegetables and I was actually craving some so I was excited to find canned green beans there. Kyle loves Chicharrones but they make me gag so I didn’t get them. They are Atkins approved but I don’t know about whether or not they are OK on a Paleo diet.
Once we got into the car, Madilyn immediately wanted her cheese so I gave it to her while I popped the top on my green beans and strained them in the parking lot (sorry, Murph!) I put them in the cup holder of my car and drove off into the horizon towards our next stop. Madilyn and I ran to the UPS store. then to the grocery store to get some split chicken breasts for dinner tonight.
When we got home, The Workaholic and Grady were out on a walk so we joined them.
I used to get extremely shaky if I ate carbohydrate and sugar-filled snacks. Now I am able to enjoy a consistent blood sugar while snacking on delicious, whole foods. I am thankful that we have both a Murphy USA and Murphy Express within 5 miles of our house so that I can get gas AND healthy snacks when I have crazy mornings like today.
Now it’s lunch for the babies, then nap time while Mommy folds 4 loads of laundry and Daddy washes the car. Fun, healthy times in the Davis Household today!
