I’ll never forget when Styles figured out there wasn’t a Santa. It really all started with the worst Tooth Fairy the world has ever seen.
*cue swirly fairy tale music*
We were still living in Savannah and Styles had lost one of his last teeth, he was in fourth grade. I was tucking my sweet boy into bed and I think he could smell the dread on me like an animal tracking its terrified prey. The tooth. The dreaded tooth. The Tooth Fairy was sure to forget about his tooth. She had, after all, only ever remembered two of his lost teeth. Oh, the disappointed mornings that boy suffered at the Tooth Fairy’s hands. He looked up at me from his bed, white hair tousled about, and said, “Mom, there’s no Tooth Fairy, is there?”
I was briefly stunned, then overwhelmingly relieved.
I answered, “No, son, there is no Tooth Fairy.” I tried to keep a somber look on my face as my insides were dancing for joy, perhaps a little too joyously. He didn’t even blink before he said, “I knew it.” which was then followed up with “Does that mean there’s no Santa?”
Oh. My. Stars. Stabs to the heart.
What the heck was I supposed to say? Of COURSE Santa is real, DUH! EVERYONE knows Santa is real! Do I keep fibbing to him? Do I tell him that Mom & Dad are Santa? Do I tell him his biological dad is Santa and that’s why he only sees him when he has presents to deliver? Do I tell him that Santa is just a feeling? What do you do in a situation like that?
I said, “Of COURSE Santa is real, DUH! EVERYONE knows Santa is real!” at the exact same time Kyle said, “Nope, Santa’s not real.”
I then went the Santa is a feeling and a spirit that exists at Christmastime and that there would always be presents under the tree from Santa as long as I’m alive. I explained Santa is that feeling we get when we put some change in the Salvation Army’s bucket each year, the joy you feel when you donate toys to children in need, and the magic that comes with surprising children with toys under the tree for as long as they believe that Santa is real.
Styles spent zero time upset that Santa wasn’t a real dude in a red fur coat that lives at the North Pole. Instead, he had fun keeping the magic alive for his friends who still believed, and now he finds great joy in helping me play Santa each year for his younger siblings. The downside to that is, he nearly always knows what he’s getting for Christmas before Christmas morning dawns upon our home.
Not this year. This year things are different. This year, Styles is getting some super awesome gifts for Christmas, and he has NO idea.
I guess this is a good time to say, in the unlikely event Styles is reading this post, turn back now. In the likely event Haydn is reading this post, you better say nothing to Styles or I will have your head. Love you, mean it. <3
Styles’ big gift is a stop motion camera and a new laptop so that he can make his own stop motion videos. I am SO excited to give these to him so that he can focus on creating things with his hands and vivid imagination while using his never-dying love for figurines and LEGOs. Like any good producer, I have to make sure he has all the props necessary to create fabulous videos, which means green screens and cool things from Walmart like a Guardians of the Galaxy Rocket Raccoon figurine, maybe a homemade baby Groot puppet? And what’s a movie without a force of nature like Drex the Destroyer?
And of course all good actors do plenty of research on their subjects, so a copy of Guardians of the Galaxy on DVD was required. The Guardians of the Galaxy DVD/Blu-Ray combo pack is awesome. It comes with an exclusive Character O-sleeve for the collectibles geek in your house (me), and exclusive music zinepack and a 64 page magazine with cast and crew interviews, exclusive behind-the-scenes photos and trivia for the trivia buff (Styles), AND a custom “cassette” laptop decal which is going to look SUPER awesome on Styles new laptop.
The magic of Santa lives on. I couldn’t very well have done it without Guardians of the Galaxy, though. I can’t wait to see the fun videos Styles comes up with. In the meantime, I’ll sit here and cruncha munch on this delectable Groot Chex Mix.
