My dad and bonus mama bought 23 acres of land in Florida a few years ago. My dad bought a tractor and cleared the land himself, right on the edge of a prehistoric sinkhole that was to be the visual feature off the back of the house that he intended to build. About a year ago they set off building the house of their dreams, and a few short weeks ago they got to move in.
We live in North Carolina now, but are going on a family vacation to Florida in a couple of weeks and I’ve been at a loss as to what I was going to get for them as a housewarming gift. They have everything they could need or want, so I’ve just been baffled. I don’t have time to crochet a blanket, which was my first thought. I don’t have the time or money to paint them a new picture and have it appropriately framed.
What to do, What to do?
I was in my local grocery store last week when I spotted some gorgeous lilies . Their vibrant, deep orangey red hue reminded me of the rich tones that my bonus mom loves, and the fires that my dad has spent his life putting out.
The gorgeous colors inspired me to make a vase for them. I picked up an inexpensive white vase, some black glass paint, and some Mod Podge Hard Finish, as well as three bunches of lilies which were on sale for 3 for $12.
When I got home, I cleaned the entire surface with rubbing alcohol.
The babies don’t like having sticky paint hands but they didn’t have a choice. I dipped their hands in black paint then blotted onto a paper towel before slowly putting them onto the vase.
I knew that I could go back and fill in any spots with a paint brush if needed, but I really like having cracks and gaps in handprints. I think it looks more authentic that way.
Once the kids hands were all cleaned up and the paint was dry, I painted over the entire vase with a glass paint sealer that I picked up at a local craft store.
That is literally IT. I let the vase sit for 24 hours before I put the beautiful lilies inside it. I just have to be really careful when dumping the water out since it has to cure for 4 weeks.
Obviously these lilies aren’t going to last for two weeks, but when we arrive in their town, I plan on buying more at a local grocery store before stopping at their house.
I prefer flowers like lilies for occasions rather than roses. I’m a little non-traditional that way, and I think that there are too many other beautiful and hearty flowers out there that provide such gorgeous pops of color to ignore. Lilies are perfect for every occasion and aren’t nearly as formal as roses or elaborate bouquets. Plus, they’re easy to find. You don’t have to go to a special florist to find a gorgeous stem of lilies. You really don’t have to look any futher than your own grocery store, garden center, or flower shop.
With Mother’s Day coming up, this would be a great gift for mom or grandma. It won’t break the bank but it will take her breath away.
