I didn’t really know what to think going into Power Rangers. I at first thought it was going to be bad, but when I talked to fans of the show they seemed to be pretty excited about it. With 5 more movies coming after it, Power Rangers has a lot riding on it. Did the movie live up to the hype, or was it the cash in failure I expected it to be? In the end I was only half right.
Power Rangers, while a failure, was definitely not a cash in. Everyone involved in this movie seemed to care about it. The last 30 minutes of the movie felt exactly like the TV show, and I was shocked with the amount of effort was put in to making it feel like the original Power Rangers. What’s sad though is that this passion for the original show is what crushes the movie.
The first two acts are actually not bad. I didn’t hate the characters like I thought I was going to, and I ended up really liking a few of them (Billy and Jason). They managed to hold my interest, when nothing was really going on. The first two acts has quite a few “what the hell” and “who speaks like that” moments , that completely slow down the momentum of the movie. There were multiple scenes where my friends and I just started laughing because of how stupid what just happened was; my personal favorite being when the team meets Alpha 5 for the first time, and Jason almost immediately says “we can kill you”. My friends and I started laughing like hyenas; I knew we were being obnoxious, but I honestly couldn’t help it. Over the course of the entire movie Rita was a joke. Every scene that she was in was accompanied with laughter, which isn’t want you want in s villain. Even with stuff like this happening though I still felt pretty good about the movie, and was going to give it a “Rent it”…. then the third act came along, and everything changed.
The last 30 minutes of the movie is laughably bad. There is a lot of build up for when the Power Rangers actually morph. All of this build up is probably what makes the action laughably bad. Like I said before the last 30 minutes are exactly like the show, and it’s funny as hell. The action was so boring that it was funny. My friends and I were CONSTANTLY laughing. (They actually play the original theme song at some point) it was dumb, it was anti climatic, and because I had people to laugh with it was amazing.
Power Rangers is a bad movie, but it’s bad in the best way. If you have a group of friends to watch it with, and you want to laugh then rent it, but if you want a more serious super hero movie then you should probably skip it.
It seems like I have two different verdicts for Power Rangers, but I still have to pick one. In the end I enjoyed Power Rangers, and don’t at all regret seeing it.
