One of the first things people ask me when I tell them that we are a Paleo family is:  “Do you do CrossFit?”

To which I reply:  “No, jerkwad, there’s no such thing as a CrossFit gym with child care.”

btw:  I LOVE that CrossFit – spelled just like that – is in the WordPress Dictionary.

At least there wasn’t in Savannah, and there isn’t here in Raleigh.  That I know of.

WHY the heck IS this?  It can’t be true that moms of young children don’t do CrossFit.  It also can’t be true that only the rich who can afford babysitters can do CrossFit.  At a low average of $10/hour for a babysitter, I’d have to sell my flabby body on the street to pay for the gym membership and someone to watch my little hoodlums.  The closest I get to CrossFit is my local YMCA’s Toning class.

  Moms doing CrossFit

SO where are the kid-friendly CrossFit gyms?  Does one exist?  Am I missing out on a HUGE money making opportunity?  I know tons of stay at home moms who cry about the same thing; “I want to do CrossFit but none of the CrossFit gyms have child care!”  and “MY kid’s not going to sit in the corner of some gym with all kinds of fantastically dangerous things to get in to!” That last one?  OH, I KNOW.  Believe me, I KNOW.

*boohooooowaaaaawaaaaaahhhhhhhh*

So help me compile a list of Kid-Friendly CrossFit Gyms.  CrossFit gyms that don’t provide childcare?  Shame on you.  Quarantine off an area for the children and hire a sitter.  I think your attendence would SOAR.

If you know of a CrossFit Gym that offers childcare, please leave it in the comments below, along with address and phone number.  I will add them state by state for poor, flabby stay at home moms who are desperate to get in shape without having to worry about their children being hit in the head by a dumbell or heavy chain.

  1. OMG, this is so true! I decided long ago that I wouldn’t join a gym again. But Crossfit is different. It actually kicks your butt and you not only become fit, you become capable of doing things you need to in order to survive. I like the idea that I could grab my son and take off running from something/someone if I had to. Or climb up on something. Or lift him up onto something. You get the idea. I’d LOVE to go to Crossfit but the one in Wichita Ks doesn’t have a sitter. And I work full time but my husband’s schedule and my schedule don’t work out for me to go. It totally sucks!!!

    • Jenny, I hope we can find one in your area! I’ll come back and comment here as soon as someone in Wichita emails me with something! :)

  2. According to some research I’ve done, these CrossFit gyms in Austin is kid friendly:

  3. THANK YOU FOR THIS! The box I attended (before I got pregnant) had a nice kids room with toys and a TV but no babysitter. I had to interrupt my workout 2-3 times on average to attend to my daughter. With a second baby due in May there’s no way I can still go unless I hire a sitter or try to go to the buttcrack of dawn WOD…doubtful that will happen on the regular with a newborn:-/

  4. Kids care at no extra cost here in Colorado :)

    • WOW, Brenda that is AMAZING!!!!!!! I’m moving to Colorado RIGHT NOW! Thank you for visiting! I will add your gym today!

  5. Hell Summer, I see a business opportunity there for a babysitter with extra time. They should approach a crossfit about working there!

  6. I live in Columbus Ohio and my box is CrossFit New Albany (CFNA). They have a CrossFit Kids program for kids to workout, often at the same time as an adult workout so that while you are doing your WOD your child(ren) can also be working out with other kids. They also have a very nice play room for kids to hang out in while parents are working out. We use it 5-7 days a week for my 6yr old. It has toys, a play kitchen, books, puzzles, a TV, with lots of DVDs, etc. AND starting in 2013 they have a play room attendant/sitter that is there at specific times/days for people with small children and babies that cannot be by themselves in a play room. No additional cost. CFNA rocks!! Best in Ohio!

We have a childcare room but you have to call ahead to schedule a bbsitter to meet you there.

    • Thanks, Erika! I have an 11 year old son, a 3 year old daughter, and a 1 year old son. Something quarantined off like this would work for us because the eldest could watch the babies. I just don’t trust the babies in an area that’s not walled off because they’re busy little bees. :)

Thanks for responding! I’ll add your box to the list tonight when I update.

  10. I have only found one crossfit in my area that has child care. The only problem is its only for one class the 9 am Monday, Wed and Fridays. I guess that is better then nothing.

  11. Check out http://www.crossfitmamas.com and do your workout at home :)

    • Hi Kate! I wish I could do my workout at home! I don’t have the drive. I need the motivation of leaving the house and joining other people to work out. I’ve tried working out at home and it lasts about one day. I am completely envious of women who can do that!

  12. We are proud to say that we not only offer CrossFit with childcare (childcare at a nominal charge of $20 per month!), but we also offer an outstanding CrossFit Kids and Teens program. Check us out in Wadsworth, Ohio in the Greater Akron Area at http://www.advancedperformancecrossfit.com!

  13. I should add that we offer childcare from for 7 classes per day! If you are in our area, check us out! Like us on Facebook at Advanced Performance CrossFit too.

    • YES! Me too. I get responses from CF Boxes almost daily now that are like, “your kids can sit against the wall and play, that’s what our other moms do.” My internal response is something like, “Did these other moms order robots online? Because my 1 and 3 year old would not sit around and stare nicely at the walls or play quietly with toys. I’d be doing a dead lift and Grady would start pulling Madilyn’s hair, and Madilyn would be knocking him upside the head with whatever heavy object she could find.” No way in heck my kids would sit still while I worked out, even for 10 minutes! Just would NOT happen. Plus, I can’t be responsible for my own children when I’m trying to get 100% out of my workout. It just doesn’t work that way.

Found your blog while searching for paleo Superbowl foods, can’t wait to try the pigs in a blanket!

I live in Fuquay, and go to Triangle Crossfit, http://www.trianglecrossfit.com It has a Raleigh address, and is just south of Garner. I’m not sure if that is near where you are in Raleigh, but couldn’t not mention it to you when I saw you mention Raleigh!! We don’t have childcare, but it is very kid friendly. They are expanding, and within the next week or two, will have a “kiddie” corral, so your kids would be within sight, but out of harm’s way.

I’ll have to wait until after our paleo challenge is over, but those chocolate cookie truffles will be on my to make list!!

    • WOW, Kristin! Thanks for the info!! We are all the way up in Wake Forest so that’s a bit of a hike for me, but I might have to come down to visit some time!

If you ever want to rendezvous, let me know! I’m down for a trip to the Farmer’s Market!

      • Carolinagirl says:

You’re welcome! That sounds like fun!!! I love the name of your blog, by the way :) I’ve bookmarked it! That’s too bad you are so far away, I was worried about that.

        • Thanks! it took me a good 3 years and 2 other blogs to come up with “the one”. Thanks for bookmarking! I have a friend in Fuquay. It takes me a good 45min – 1 hr to get there. Raleigh is HUGE!

  16. There are some things you need to consider though when you want a box to open ChildCare. It’s a little unfair to say “shame on you” to boxes that don’t do Childcare for VERY GOOD reasons, or for not wanting to find sitters.

Here is what is currently going on with my box, who has decided they might want to do childcare, and my thoughts with it. They decided to offer it on a trial basis for their 6 week program they are introducing specifically for women-it is 6 weeks, 3 classes a week, at 930 AM. I’ve offered to take up the childcare since I just had my baby 7 weeks ago, and since I baby wear, I can safely bring her and put her in the sling or in my mini swing and know she’ll be fine for 1 hour. I’m doing this for 18 hours in exchange for a month in a half of free gym membership; depending on how it goes, it might become a permanent fixture and i would just work 15-18 hours a month.

However, as someone who has actually trained in ECE, has a CDA and worked for years in childcare, i now have reservations because my gym doesn’t seem to be taking this seriously. They just decided “hey, let’s do childcare” and haven’t actually thought about it.

first off- we don’t have a room for the kids. It will be a fenced off area (like you said) with just me. Great! But how many kids do YOU think is safe? For me, with an infant already, I don’t feel comfortable watching more than 2-3 other kids at a time. So far, signed up for this class, we had 3 infants and a toddler. That’s 4 kids under 2-according to State rations in California, i’ve already hit the amount of kids I can watch safely. But there’s still time for more to sign up! Unliscensed daycares aren’t regulated by state ratios, so it’s by the gyms discretion. My gym seems to think that I should be comfortable with 6-7 kids, of all ages, in a fenced off area that would be no bigger than a small living room or dining room, with no assistance. Would YOU want your infant in that scenario?

Second, they have no equipment. I will be bringing a swing from my house, and a boppy pillow-where are those babies supposed to go? Let me be clear-all of these babies will be 0-3 months. They were all born within 2-3 weeks of each other (including mine, who at the youngest wil lbe 9 weeks). i have a swing for one, a sling for mine, and where will the other safely go? With a toddler running around? There are no toys for the toddler. Would you feel safe with your infant in that case, with a toddler and the possibility that he/she will just lay on a mat because we have no place for them?

Third, I have no assistance. The wife of the owner mentioned that she would jump in if it got to crazy, but also said she wants to work out with the group. ok, so what happens if you’re in the middle of the WOD and one of the babies just had a blow out while I’m feeding another one? I can’t exactly leave the area unsupervised (years of childcare has conditioned me to never let a baby out of my sight, especially one that is not my own) and I can’t exactly just change the diaper. Will you stop what you’re doing and come assist? What if all 3 babies decided they need to be soothed at the same time? Will she stop in the middle and come assist? What if the toddler or another child decides to throw a toy at one of the babies while I’m busy with another child?

fourth, they haven’t put a cap on it. It just says “free childcare” on their poster. So all participants could theoretically bring children (and the class caps out at 15) and I would have 16+ (including my own). In a living room sized area. With AT LEAST 3 babies. Even with 2 people that’s not safe.

What I guess i’m saying is, my gym is doing EXACTLY what you think gyms should do. Just hiring someone to stand in a fenced off area for children. But as someone with a background in childcare, it isn’t nearly that neat or easy. Especially when the majority ARE stay at home moms with children under 2. Not potty trained, and very needy of adult attention.

If I had a room where I knew the children would be safe and not run off, or if I had a way to have all the babies in a swing, or in something so they wouldn’t get trampled on by a crazy toddler/2 year old I’d even feel better. If I had something of the toddler and two year old to do while I attended to the needs of the babies i’d feel better. But i don’t. my gym will literally have me and who knows how many kids (4 of which i already know will be babies or under 2) in a fenced off area, with a swing and a boppy that I’M providing.

Does that sound safe, or practical? I think Crossfit Gyms need to be equipped for childcare, or if they DO want to do the “fenced off area with babysitter” there needs to be ground rules. If you’re not equipped with a childcare room where you can have someone on staff constantly, than you shouldn’t just open it up. It should either be a drop-in, needs only, first come first serve basis. It should be closed off at 3-4 children, and you can only utilize it in emergencies. Or, all children must be a minimum for 2 years old, and the ratio can up to 5-6 children. That’s the best for the safety of the kids.
