Hi, my name’s Summer and I’ve never smoked a cigarette in my life.
True story.
Kind of.
(There is an awesome coupon at the end of this article for an eCigarette. I just want to tell you a tale first.)
I was exposed to LOTS of second hand smoke when I was growing up. My mom used to crack the window about 1″ and swear that the smoke was going outside so there was no way I could possibly smell the smoke. It used to make me gag, as a matter of fact, it still does.
I’ve never understood the addiction to something so disgusting. Sugar, I get. Cigarettes? Not so much.
When I was 16, my uncle Noel was diagnosed with lung cancer. They removed one of his lungs, but it wasn’t enough to save him. About a year later, he succumbed to the cancer and passed away.
Do you think losing a brother to lung cancer was enough to make my mom quit smoking? Nope. Nada. I think she might have started smoking more, actually.
A few, short years later, he youngest brother, at the age of 36, was diagnosed with malignant melanoma. They removed the melanoma, and he was supposed to have PET scans every 6 months from then on. Unfortunately he didn’t, and he ended up becoming a walking cancer victim. He also eventually succumbed to lung cancer, shortly after his 41st birthday.
My mom continued to smoke. I totally didn’t get it. Especially when she smoked during a severe case of bronchitis.
On July 9, 2010 on her 54th birthday, my mom went to the hospital with what she thought was just pneumonia. She probably smoked a cigarette on the way there. After a battery of tests, the doctors told her that she had aggressive lung cancer. My sister, who smokes, was beside herself. I was disgusted. I had been in Florida visiting at the time and I had to leave to go back to Georgia. I couldn’t even bring myself to go to the hospital because I was furious with my mother. I won’t even tell you what was going through my mind because I don’t want you to change your glowing opinion of me.
She underwent even more tests, and one day while still in the hospital, her lungs cleared up. Not completely, but they were much better. Her Pulmonologists had no answers. They said they had never seen anything like it before. One doctor called it a miracle. Call it what you will, she was diagnosed with a severe lung infection, no cancer.
I’m so proud of her because she hasn’t smoked a “real” cigarette since then. Because she is a truck driver, and had been smoking cigarettes for so darned long, she started using e-Cigarettes. I wasn’t sure that they were any better for her and neither was my Aunt Sue. So one day Aunt Sue accompanied mom to the Pulmonologist and asked him whether or not the e-Cigs were any better than real cigs. He said that they are completely safe, and that my mom was free to smoke them all day if she wanted to.
Because I never struggled with an addiction like smoking, I don’t know how hard it is to quit, but I am SO, SO proud of my mom for dropping the real cigs and making a much healthier choice. There are varying degrees of nicotine in the packs, you can get flavored cartridges, and they are much, much cheaper than smoking a pack of cigarettes a day. Mom doesn’t stink any more, I can hug her without gagging, I can ride in the car with her without needing a barf bag, I can let my kids ride with her, and I can egg her on about smoking inside a restaurant now. I love the looks people give us when we eat out and she “lights up”.
Mom has tried several different eCigarettes, but the best place you can possibly go to get honest reviews on eCigarettes is ecigarettereviewed.com. eCigarette Reviewed is the largest and most reliable source of eCigarette reviews on the web.

I’m going to set up my email to send this post to my mom every week. We’ve lost so many people to cancer and it’s ridiculous that she’s still doing it.

Sometimes it takes a personal experience to scare the pants off of someone, and sometimes that’s not even enough. Send it to her until she stops!
Just an FYI I’ve quit smoking as well. And only smoke my e-cig. I quit about 6 months ago. E-cigs are well worth it. I couldn’t have quit without it!!
you go, girl!!! I’ll be having a giveaway for an eCig on the blog for the next 2 weeks, you’ll have to enter to win!
Summer, my dad was a truck driver for over 25 years. So very few truck drivers DON’T smoke. I think my dad has smoked for about 40ish years. He was able to kick a drug addiction & stop drinking but smoking has proved too hard for him. I’m going to forward this to him because I wonder if he’s ever heard of this. Thanks for your review. I have seen these online before but I didn’t understand or believe what they were. Coming from you though, it’s a completely different thing <3

I haven’t smoked in a long time! (was a redneck kid and started pretty early) I don’t know if these things would have changed my mind about quitting but I’m sure they are a much healthier option!

My parents both smoked when I was little, too – I so don’t get it either, but I’m proud of my mom for quitting! My dad never has been able to, though – something like this could really help!

I like that smokers now have options past quitting cold turkey and patches. This can help a lot of people!

I just love that your mom quit smoking the real thing!
I love love love this post! My grandfather died of lung cancer when I was a year old and there are pictures of my mother putting flowers on his grave with a cigarette in her hand! Maybe if I show her this she might try the e-cig. Thanks!
Yep I’m the mom Summer wrote about. I enjoyed smoking but it was killing me. I actually didn’t smoke or use anything for the first 3 months but I missed smoking so badly that I was terrified of going back to real cigs Summer and I were shopping in a mall in Savannah and that’s where I learned about ecig s. they work so check out v2
