Taking vacation with my children ranks right up there with playing in a pit of cobras or waking a hibernating grizzly bear. I’m with them all the time, why would I want to “get away” WITH them? That doesn’t even make any sense!
And then I went on my first cruise. I realized I could take my kids on vacation and we could all vacation together – separately. This is a genius idea. Kind of like being rich enough to afford taking a nanny on vacation with you. Wouldn’t that be nice? *psh*
The ship I was on, Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas, has so much for families to do together, like this fantastic pool.
Right there next to the family pool, there’s a flipping soft serve machine. Soft serve ice cream, all you can eat, right next to the pool. Nothing makes my kids happier than ice cream, except maybe splashing in a colorful pool with other kids in the middle of the ocean while eating ice cream. That’s pretty awesome.
Right about the time the crankies set in, Daddy can take kids back to the room and make them take a nap while the teen and I explore the arcade or take a cupcake decorating class together.
Once the kids wake up, you can take them to the kids areas, drop them off, smile sweetly while you wave goodbye, then run away as far and as fast as you can go. Mommy and Daddy have some exploring to do!
The best part about all of this? All of the following are included in the cost of your cruise:
There are babysitting options for after-hours as well, but you can get away with the included babysitting as long as you plan well for your cruise.
While the kids are enjoying time with kids their own age doing super fun things in the various kids areas, which are separated by age, Mommy and Daddy can do some putt putt golf, go play in the casino, enjoy a romantic meal at one of the restaurants, have a cocktail poolside, go see a show, ride the Flow Rider, good gracious – the possibilities are nearly limitless. And this can happen every, single day of your venture. Know what’s going on on board your cruise ship so that you maximize your trip.
Royal Caribbean is partners with DreamWorks, so you can also meet characters from various DreamWorks movies, like Shrek & Fiona, and Po from Kung Fu Panda. Don’t miss Shrek and Fiona dancing Gangnam Style on the pool deck, it’s hilarious.
I did not have my kids on this last trip, but I really can’t imagine a better vacation to take with your family. Disney is where the magic happens, right? Right. If by magic you mean your already loud, moody child turns immediately into every Disney villain ever created, then yes. That’s where the magic happens. Don’t get me wrong, I freaking love Disney. But I love to do Disney as an adult. By myself. Call me selfish, tell me I should never have had children, whatever. This cruise thing? THIS Is a vacation that the kids AND mom and dad can enjoy. And it’s not a vacation that will require a month to recover from.
The worst that can happen is you have a hard time getting back into the swing of having someone else care for your kids for a week straight. As if that’s not bad enough, right?
